Backyard Chickens

In April 2012, the Chelsea City Council approved a City Ordinance (No. 172) providing requirements to support the residential ownership of up to four backyard chickens. An annual permit is required of all residents who own backyard chickens. The Backyard Chicken permit application requires a description of all pens, coops, cages and enclosures constructed for housing and confining chickens; the distance and the location of all pens, coops, cages, and enclosures from all adjacent property lines. There is a $10 annual application fee.

Completed applications can be mailed to the Chelsea City Office, dropped off in the secure drop box located at the back of the City Offices, faxed to 734-475-1811 or emailed to lkaiser@city-chelsea.org.
