The City of Chelsea's fiscal year begins July 1 and ends June 30. Plante & Moran is the City's current audit firm. Like most government entities, the City financials are made up of a number of funds. Certain funds operate as government funds and others—like the Electric, Water and Wastewater departments—operate as enterprise funds, similar to a standard business. The City complies with governmental accounting standards administered by the Government Accounting Standards Board (GASB).
